Setting up feeds [Solved]

Post by Suzgale »

Hi

I am new to the whole idea of feeds. I am trying to set up some of the individual feeds that are listed at the web site: http://www.sacbee.com/rss/

I have tried this several different ways and nothing works.

Can I select some of the individual feeds listed here or can I only select the general Sacbee.com feed? That is, only the address given above?

I really don't want all the feeds. I run a small biz in the area and need to keep up with local news in certain subject areas.

Thanks

Suz

Hello,

Welcome to the wonderful world of feeds!

When adding feeds in xFeed, most sites will do fine by just typing the main url to the site ie: http://www.sacbee.com/rss/ will be more than sufficient. xFeed will find all the feeds that the site has set up to be "autodiscovered."

However, for a site such as that one, with many feeds, It would be too cumbersome to have all of their feeds set up to be autodiscovered. In this situation there is more than one way to add the desired feeds.

For this particular site each sub-division has a different autodiscover feed. For example http://www.sacbee.com will have the main features feed. Whereas the http://www.sacbee.com/entertainment will have the entertainment feed set to autodiscover. So for example you wanted to add the feeds for business you would type http://www.sacbee.com/business into the search for feeds box.

There is also another way to add the feeds. If when browsing the sacbee.com site from safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch you navigate to http://www.sacbee.com/rss. On this page you have an expansive list of feeds. If you were to click on the feed of your choice that feed would open up in the default safari feed reader. From that page in safari you can load the feeds into xFeed by making one simple change in the address bar. Once a feed is opened in safari the url in the address bar will be changed to http://reader.mac.********* all you have to do is navigate to the farthest left of the address bar and change the http:// to xfeed:// and xFeed will automatically open and add your feed.

For a visual demonstration of these concepts. Please visit http://www.nothingeverywhere.com/xFeed/faq and click on "How do I add Feeds"

Thank you for you question and if you have any more, please, feel free to ask them here.

Hello Again

Well, it was solved, but only for SacBee. I have successfully added the RSS feeds I wanted. I love this app; no more newspaper. Now I want to find more, but doing so is not as intuitive as you indicate in your reply. I am trying to subscribe to the MacWorld RSS Feed (either the ALL choice or selected ones) and I seem unable to do so. I have tried replicating everything you suggested and nothing works. I cannot even locate the feeds doing a google search. I have to go all the way to the MW site and click RSS. But no iteration of the web address seems to work.

Please explain to me how to make this adding feeds more intuitive so I don't have to ask for help for every single site. There has to be a clearer way to do this. I am not a novice. I am a skilled Mac and ipod touch user, I am just new to the RSS area.

Thanks again for a great app

Hello,

Unfortunately on the iPhone, one is not able to have a third party program registered to be the default application for reading feeds. This situation throws the simplest solution for adding feeds out the window. Given these circumstances, every effort has been made to make adding a feed with xFeed as simple as possible.

Concerning the Macworld feed. If you type macworld.com into the add feed box and search, you will come up with the default feed for the Macworld site. However if you would like to add a feed from a more specific category on the Macworld site you may use Safari on the iPhone to navigate to

http://www.macworld.com/feeds/index

once you are on this page you can choose any of the categories on this page and once they open up in the mac reader, you can apply the same steps as before by changing the leading http:// to xfeed:// and xFeed will launch and add your feed.

The faq is not much help right now as it contains pictures and instructions from a previous version. This will be changed soon.

If you have any more questions about adding feeds, feel free to share.
