Reverts to old/unusable UI behavior sporadically

Version 3, with the new UI, works very unpredictably on my original iPad under iOS 5.
Frequently, when I attempt to return from a "full article" view, the list of articles in the feed does not slide in on the left side in a short column (intended new UI behavior). Instead, it covers the entire screen, full width (as in version 2). Once this happens, it becomes impossible to view any more articles in any feed. Selecting an article from the list gives the proper UI feedback, but the article list does not flip or slide out of the way or narrow itself into a column, so you can't see the article summary page or the "view full article" button.
The only way to reset this and get back to a usable UI is to force-quit XFeed and restart it.
This does not always happen... seems more common when viewing complex pages containing rich content (e.g. CNN) and less likely for simple feed sites.
Help! The old UI was perfectly reliable, the new UI would be OK if it worked consistently, but the inconsistent failure of the new UI makes the app extremely frustrating.
